Description

Asclepius was a god of medicine in the Greek pantheon. He is depicted carrying a staff with a snake wrapped around it, which is often confused for the Caduceus staff carried by Hermes. He was the son of Apollo and a mortal woman, and became so skilled as a healer that he overshadowed his both his father and the centaur, Chiron. However, this was ultimately his undoing, as Zeus executed him with a judgement bolt after Asclepius raised people from the dead, angering Hades. Asclepius was revered in Pergamon, with a sanctuary at the head of the Acropolis. People would travel to the 'Asclepium' to heal and relax, with some saying that the god came to them in their dreams, offering wisdom and a way to cure their illness.
