Description

The Greek writer Herodotus, source for what little we know about Scythian religious practices, claimed that Goitosyros was roughly the same as the Greek god Apollo. Therefore it seems reasonable to assume that Goitosyros was a god of light, the sun, truth and many other manly accomplishments. It’s a reasonable assumption, but we have no way of telling what Goitosyros really personified, and in what ways. Like the other Scythian gods, we also have few details of specific rituals honouring, and requirements of, Goitosyros. It is, however, safe to assume that sacrifice played a part, and that sacrifices were expected to represent a true loss to the supplicant. In many cultures true offerings to the gods had to be something that it hurt to lose. If the offering didn't hurt then the disfavour of the gods could be sure to follow in short order.
